Announcements - EnvironMentors

EnvironMentors, a national college access program, was founded in 1992  as an environment-based mentoring program whose mission is to  “mentor and motivate high school students from under-resourced communities as they conduct scientific research and acquire skills that will allow them to build careers and become more active stewards of their communities and the environment.”

In 2008, LAWR was chosen as one of the first few EnvironMentors chapters across the country. The Davis Area EnvironMentors 2009-10 Program is going to start in fall of 2009. With some start up funding from the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences the Outreach Coordinator of LAWR is going to work with a science teacher of Encina Preparatory High School in Sacramento on getting a successful mentoring program implemented.  15 high school students mentored by an undergraduate or graduate student from LAWR will develop an environmental research project over the course of the 2009/2010 school year.  The research projects will be presented and judged regionally and the 3 winning teams will travel to Washington DC, to compete for University scholarships at the final research project demonstration at the national level.

A donation to this program will provide under-represented youths in Sacramento with access to the UC Davis community, and at the same time, support LAWR student’s efforts in mentoring, outreach, and teaching.
