The Consilience of Art and Science
While UC Davis is home to world renowned programs in the Arts and Sciences, there are very few opportunities for harnessing the creative energy that lies in the intellectual borderland where Art and Science meet.
A deep incursion into this art/science borderland was carried out during this past academic year. Based on a grant written by Professor Terry Nathan and funded by the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, with matching funds provided by several Departments, including LAWR the “Art/Science Fusion Program” offered at the UC Davis Centennial Colloquium, "The Consilence of Art and Science" speaker series.
This unique colloquium brought to the campus four of the world's leading scholars who are delving into the practice and theory of art/science fusion. Total attendance for the colloquium series exceeded 1,000, with attendees coming from as far away as the San Francisco Bay area and Oregon. The colloquium series culminated in an art/science exhibition at the Pence Gallery in Davis, which was co-jurored by Terry Nathan and nationally known ceramicist Donna Billick. Professor Wendy Silk's art/science fusion class, "Earth, Water, Science and Song," provided music for the opening night. The opening night attendance at the Pence was among the highest ever for the gallery. Owing to the enormous success of the colloquium series and exhibition, plans are in the works to offer “The Consilience of Art and Science” again in the future.
